If you are experiencing difficulty accessing these documents, then the following may help:
- first please note that the files - especially the presentations - are fairly large. It is
for this reason that some have been converted into portable document format (.pdf). To
open these you need a copy of a programme called Adobe Acrobat Reader. This is available free from
Adobe; a link to the site where the Acrobat programme can be obtained is
here.
Some large files - or multiple files which are part of the same document - have been 'zipped'
together into a single document archive (similar to a folder) using a program called WinZip. This
also has the benefit of compressing the files to varying degrees (depending on their contents) and
so reducing the overall size of the data (in KB) to be downloaded. Where ever a WinZip archive is
available as a download option, then it is usually preferable to use it. To open the WinZip archive
requires an application called 'Winzip' (duh!). You can get Winzip
here. The evaluation version - all you need - is
free.
- as some of the files are large, then it can take some time for these to download to you,
especially if you are using a dial-up connection. This takes much longer than when opening
similar files from your hard drive or from a file server on your local area network. If you
want to open the files directly from the site then there is no option but to be patient (and
look forward to the day when we all have access to fast, broadband connections!). The file
should then open as either an Acrobat document, MS Word or MS PowerPoint presentation within your
browser. From here you can save the file by going to > File > Save As...
- since the process of opening files in your browser does require your computer to take some
extra steps, then I recommend that you instead download the required file directly to your
computer or network without first opening it for viewing. Once it has been saved to your
computer or local network then it can be quickly and easily opened from there. This kind of
download is generally faster and your system should give a graphic illustration the progress
of the download as it progresses.
- some corporate networks do not allow the download of document greater than a certain size
by default, or may not allow them through corporate firewalls for virus protection purposes.
If you suspect this to be the case, then please contact your system administrator.
If you have any further problems, then please contact the
webmaster.
